University of Detroit Mercy graduate receives top honor from Delta Dental Foundation

OKEMOS, Mich., (May 30, 2012) — The Delta Dental Foundation recently honored Lindsay Smith, D.D.S. of Montrose, Mich. with its prestigious Student Leadership Award. Smith is a 2012 graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry.

Smith was selected for the award based on her scholastic abilities, leadership skills and dedication to community service. She ranked academically in the top third of her dental class and served in leadership roles in several organizations, including the Michigan Dental Association, Alpha Omega, and president of the UDM Student Government.

In addition, Smith participated in several community service opportunities while attending the university. She worked with Alpha Omega’s Special Smiles event for Special Olympic athletes and traveled to Guatemala to provide oral health care to individuals in underserved areas. She has also continued to be an annual participant in the Detroit Oral Cancer Walk.

Since 2001, the Delta Dental Foundation has granted a Student Leadership Award to one senior dental student from University of Detroit Mercy and four other dental schools in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana including Case Western Reserve University, The Ohio State University, Indiana University and University of Michigan. Furthermore, the Foundation has provided eight scholarships per school, or 40 in total, to undergraduate dental students.
