Okemos, Michigan— For the fourth year, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Mid Michigan Art Contest is underway thanks to the support of Delta Dental of Michigan and the MSU Broad Art Lab.

The 2022 MLK Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan Art Contest is an opportunity for local artists to showcase their talents while honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“The arts have a unique ability to frame our world in ways that bring people together and cause them to think differently about our world,” said Elaine Hardy, chairperson of the commission. “We believe this art contest provides context for people to help promote the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.”

Categories for entry include students in grade 6-8, students in grade 9-12 and adults. Cash prizes will be awarded ranging from $500 - $1000.

This year’s theme is "In the long run, justice finally must spring from a new moral climate." Art entries must be relevant and consistent with the theme and be accompanied with a 250-word narrative that explains the concept of the piece and its relation to social justice and inequity.

Artists will have their work on display at the MSU Broad Art Lab April 9 through May 22 and winners will be honored during an April 8 reception at the MSU Broad Art Lab.

Entries are due 1 p.m. Friday April 1.
