11/19/2021 Delta Dental gifts Forgotten Harvest new food delivery truck, reaching more homes
Okemos, Michigan—The newest food rescue truck in Forgotten Harvest’s fleet will hit the road any day now, transporting healthy and filling food to those in need within metro Detroit.
The 24-foot box truck was a $150,000 investment from Delta Dental, a longtime partner of the organization which works to reduce food waste in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties. Delta Dental has donated $1.3 million to Forgotten Harvest since 2015.
“This truck is another asset in the toolbox,” said Kirk Mayes, Forgotten Harvest CEO. “It will be on the road 10-12 hours a day for the next 8-10 years and used in all operations, including grocery store rescue and food delivery. Being able to pick up and distribute more food is critical right now as more families have become food insecure over the course of the pandemic.”
Just in time for the holidays, the truck will drop off food at mobile pantries where community members can stock up on fresh, healthy food needed for their seasonal gatherings.
And it’s a reminder to those who do have the means to feed their families to be mindful of how much food is purchased. Each year, the average American family of four loses $1,500 to uneaten food or about 1,160 pounds.
To get ahead of the problem, it’s imperative to plan ahead and be wise with your shopping.
